Firefighters Extinguish Compactor Fire
On December 21, 2013 at 7:23am the Oaks Corners Fire Department was dispatched to Halco at 865 County
Road 6 in Phelps for a report of a compactor fire near the building. Oaks Corners Engine 3211, Pumper/Tanker
3231, & Heavy Rescue 3271 responded with a crew of 17 under the Direction of Deputy Chief Mike Reifsteck.
The first arriving units found fire & smoke showing fro a large trash compacter unit which was filled with plastics
and packing foam. Engine 3211 deployed two hand lines and quickly knocked down the fire. Firefighters using
a thermal imaging camera determined the fire was located at the bottom of the dumpster and towards the front
of the compactor. Cassella Waste was requested to the scene to assist in unloading the dumpster/compactor.
Once the compactor could be emptied firefighters tore apart the burning trash and extinguished with a foam
solution. The cause of the fire was unintentional in nature.
