On Sunday September 2, 2013 at 12:03 pm the Phelps Fire Department, with automatic mutual aid from the Oaks Corners Fire Company, was dispatched to 20 Kathlyn Avenue in the Village of Phelps for a reported garage fire. Callers were reporting a fire in an attached garage with explosions and wires down. Oaks Corners Chief Brian Maney reported smoke showing from several miles away, prompting Phelps Chief Ron Nieskes to request an engine & ladder from the Clifton Springs Fire Department.
Phelps Engine 2131 was the first unit to arrive on scene and reported a working house fire. Engine 2131 stretched lines to both the front and rear of the structure and made an interior attack. Crews from Oaks Corners Engine 3211 stretched a third line and worked on the fire in the garage. Clifton Springs Engine 531 layed a supply line from Route 88 and supplied Engine 2131 and Ladder 581. Clifton Springs Fire Police provided traffic control for several hours. Oaks Corners Rescue's 3271 & 3261 assisted with manpower & firefighter rehab. Stand-by coverage was provided by the Marbletown, Geneva, & Manchester Fire Departments. The Oaks Corners & Clifton Springs Auxiliaries also assisted on scene.
The Oaks Corners response consisted of Engine 3211, Pumper/Tanker 3231, Heavy Rescue 3271, & Rescue 3261 with a crew of 26 responders under the direction of Chief Brian Maney.
