Town of Phelps Fire Departments Conduct Extensive
Training in Acquired Structure.
During the months of March and April of 2008, The three fire departments that protect the Town of Phelps
conducted extensive training in an acquired house on Route 14. Late in 2007, the Oaks Corners Fire Department,
along with several other area departments, responded to a house fire at 1407 Rt. 14 in the Town of Phelps. Fire
spread was confined to the room of origin, as well as the attic area. The owners of the home decided that they did
not want to make the extensive repairs necessary to make the house inhabitable. They contacted the Oaks Corners
Fire Department to see if they were interested in using the house for training, and the department decided to take
advantage of their offer.

The Training Officers of the Oaks Corners, Phelps, & Clifton Springs Fire departments met and decided on an
extensive list of training topics and arranged for instructors within the departments to teach them. Over a two month
period, the three departments conducted training on the following topics...
  • Advancing 1 3/4" and 2 1/2" hose lines.
  • Vent, Enter, & Search Tactics
  • F.A.S.T. / R.I.T. Team Operations
  • Rescuing Firefighters in Floor Collapses
  • Firefighter Rehab.
  • Window Removal
  • Forcible Entry
  • Thermal Imaging Camera Operations
  • Emergency Air Supply with R.I.T. Packs
